Responsible fishing in the face of climate change

The fishing sector has been prepared for the fishing seasons of 2020; a particular year due to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some actions were developed which had as a priority to respect each one of the protocols, thinking about the welfare of the employees. In this way, it was possible to comply with the export plans, generate income from fishing for the state and keep reaching the tables of all Peruvians. This hard work allowed the development of fishing to continue; however, other factors, such as climate change could affect its continuity in the future.

Scientific reports have indicated variations in maritime temperature: two degrees less on the surface, to be accurate. This change may seem minimal, since biomass tends to adapt, but in a few years, with such frequent temperature fluctuations, it could lead to serious consequences in the marine ecosystem. For this reason, it is important to prevent and take measures that protect the resources from the reality of climate change.

To promote responsible management in companies in the sector, along with reforms and the support from the state, is fundamental to prevent damages that could harm species for years to come, to the process of sustainable development and to future generations.

Within the initiatives that can be implemented there is the investment in changes of energy arrays that minimize the emission of greenhouse gases. This is how, in 2013, at Hayduk Corporation we changed the energy matrix to natural gas in our plant in Coishco, Chimbote. On the other hand, having scientific, real and immediate information is valuable for making decisions in the management of sustainable fishing. For instance, the repository of scientific information www.humboldtresiliente.org, developed by the National Fisheries Society (NFS), along with the NGO ``Environmental Defense Fund” (EDF).

Climate change exists and we are witnesses of the effects it causes on our planet. We invite everyone to adopt actions for the prevention of this phenomenon that, with the passage of time, has been accentuating. If we set our minds on it, together we can protect the different species and ecosystems that inhabit our planet and make a better world.
