Post Covid-2019 fishing: A necessary push

In the middle of the economic crisis that our country is going through, some doubts were raised about the reactivation of different activities and even that some of them might not be able to recover in the short term. That is the case of industrial fishing, which, in the middle of a sanitary emergency, had to pause the extraction work and reduce the labour at the plant. Today, with the biosecurity protocols, little by little we are reaching a new normal, one that coexists with the pandemic.

The opening of the first fishing season of the year promised an interesting start and came along with positive results, because the anchovy biomass for this year was healthy due to the care of the sustainability of the specie that has been respected through the years by the fishing industry. It is important to mention that for the moment some exports had been paused, affecting our industry somewhat.

To overcome this crisis, it is not only necessary to execute the reactivation plan that the state is promoting, but also to set precise measurements in our sector that allows us a more progressive growth. It is essential that the reactivation of anchovy fishing in the south to be a reality, because it would mean an important income, not only for the zone, but also for the national GNPs growth.

Without a doubt, what is next for the fishing industry will depend on the state attending and prioritizing the activities that will be beneficial to generate an influential reactivation in our sector. We know that such decisions are not easy to make, but we are sure that they will be positive for the country. In sum, what we need as a sector is more confidence to be able to invest economically and participate on the recovery of the country in a responsible way, improving our security protocols and preserving the environment.
