Closed season: A pause for sustainability

As peruvians we should feel proud to have been born in a country full of marine wealth, any other country in the world would wish to have the resources that ours has. However, compatriots and foreigners, fish and exploit resources that are prohibited, either out of ignorance or because they don´t give the proper importance to the sustainability of the species. Because of this, the state has decreed different parameters to continue enjoying of our marine wealth for much longer, for example, the closed seasons. But, do you know what closed seasons are and what are they for?

The closed season refers to the period in which it is prohibited the capture of a species to prevent it´s predation and, in that way, allow it´s growth, reproduction and subsistence. It is a way to give the ecosystem a rest. In our country the closed season is regulated by the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), that through inspections look for those who don´t comply with the closed season. The sanctions go from confiscation of the species to jail when the species are protected.

It is imperative to respect closed seasons in full, because the opposite means a damage not only to the species but to the entire chain it represents, including us. In our country we enjoy different species that are used daily, either for industry, small entrepreneurs or for our own consumption. However, if we don´t consume this resources in a sustainable way, they might become extinct; a clear example of this is the Macha, a species that nowadays is very hard to find and that is under closed season almost through the entire year. Let´s not wait for more species to be scarce in our country.

To know wich species are in closed season, PRODUCE has published on it´s website the entire list of current closed seasons and also the list of species that are permanently protected. Also, campaigns providing information and education on other types of marine resources are carried out. It is in our hands to make them respect and not buy or consume products that have species in closed season. We have to be that change that our marine biodiversity needs to remain healthy for a much longer period of time.

At Hayduk Corporation we are commited to continue supporting and respecting the regulations that protect the species that inhabit our coast, both temporary and definitive closed seasons. ¡Let´s continue in this path of respect and conservation of our sea and its riches!
