Why its importance?
The anchovy is a species rich in proteins, vitamins and Omega 3. As part of the chain food, other fish and marine animals depend on it. It is also a resource important for industrial and artisanal fishing, both in Indirect Human Consumption (CHI) and Direct Human Consumption (CHD) products, which they in turn contribute to the country's economy.
What makes it vulnerable?
The El Niño phenomenon would have an impact on the anchovy population, both in its distribution as in its availability. In this way, this event would affect the ecosystem, as well as various sectors and the economy.
What's the plan with the anchovy?
Among other initiatives, the Peruvian anchovy fishery has been working on the Project Improvement of Fisheries (PROME), which corresponds to a step prior to the process of MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification, a tool that strengthens the management sustainable hydrobiological resources.
Thus, in 2017, the Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP, for its acronym in English) of anchovy began, which seeks certifiable status according to CASS guidelines. Their action plan includes updating the previous pre-assessment of the MSC standard, an assessment of the trophic impacts of fishing, a more comprehensive analysis of the impact to other species, among others.
In conclusion, the anchovy is a very valuable resource for the marine
ecosystem and our country. For this reason, it is important that new measures
continue to be proposed that allow its sustainability. The fishing sector,
aware of its importance, is committed to a responsible fishing, for which its
good management has been recognized by organizations such as the FAO.
